The staged reading of “Angels in America, Part One: Millenium Approaches,” will feature prominent members of the Chicago Theater community. We, like so many, are such tremendous fans of this work and grateful we have it in times like this. We see “Millennium Approaches” as a call to action as a nation falls apart. We believe it will be a very special evening to connect and galvanize the Chicago theater community and its patrons.
Our evening will celebrate the power of voices that challenge the current political climate, on stage and in the streets. Ticket sales will directly benefit our local chapter of the ACLU as well as season of political theater curated at A Red Orchid. Attendees will have opportunities to support additional organizations like the Howard Brown Health Center, Planned Parenthood, and the Committee to Protect Journalists.
From Director, Shade Murray: “Political and heartfelt, historical and mythical, Tony Kushner’s epic play is about a nation falling apart during a sisemic shift in politics and morality. Spiritual forces intervene, culminating in the arrival of an angel and a call to rebuild. The play promises to fascinating experience at this juncture: Roy Cohn, a principle character in the play, was a mentor of our current president. Angels In America has profound statements to make about our past, the present and quite possibly our future.”
Victory Gardens Theater has agreed to donate the historic Biograph Theater for the night. Actors, designers and musicians will be donating their services for the cause. Tony Kushner has donated the rights for the play for the evening.
All proceeds from ticket sales and donations will directly benefit A Red Orchid Theatre and the Chicago Chapter of the ACLU. We hope you will join us or consider making a donation to support this cause.
