Simpatico in New Jersey
By Sam Shepard
Directed by Ensemble Member Dado
McCarter Theatre Center, Princeton, New Jersey
Sept 8th – Oct 15th, 2017
This past fall, A Red Orchid opened the McCarter Theatre Center’s season with a remount of our production of Simpatico. It featured many of the original cast and crew, including Ensemble members Jennifer Engstrom, Mierka Girten, Michael Shannon, & Guy Van Swearingen. Directed again by Ensemble Member Dado, with lighting designs by Ensemble Member Mike Durst.
Buried secrets, blackmail, and false identities race onto the stage in this hard-driving tragicomedy about the slippery netherworld of thoroughbred racing from Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Sam Shepard. When a simple phone call causes Carter and Vinnie’s shady past to resurface, fierce loyalties that were once hot-blooded begin to run astray. McCarter will collaborate with A Red Orchid Theatre to bring this riveting American drama to Princeton.
From McCarter Theatre Center’s Artistic Director, Emily Mann:
Celebrating Sam Shepard
“It is a stunning personal loss to all of us who knew him and a devastating loss for the theater that the great Sam Shepard has died. One of the most important playwrights of his generation, Sam Shepard shaped the American theater from the moment his plays appeared on our stages—and in so many theaters across the globe—in the late 1960s.
We dedicate our opening play of the season, Sam’s Simpatico featuring A Red Orchid Theatre, to his memory. In this way, he lives on.”
Performances for Simpatico ran September 8 through October 15 in the Berlind Theatre.
